Guide to wedding speeches

Speeches can be nervewracking, so here's a few tips...

Who's giving your speeches?

Decide who you'd like to give speeches at your wedding, and give them plenty of notice! You might also like to give them these guidelines to help them along.

You might decide to have speeches from:

  • The Bride
  • The Groom
  • The Father of the Bride
  • The Best Man
  • The Chief Bridesmaid
  • ...someone else?

What order will they speak in?

Traditionally, the order goes:

  • The Father of the Bride
  • The Groom
  • The Best Man

What will they speak about?

The Father of the Bride

The Father of the Bride's speech often includes:

  • A welcome to the Groom's parents, the relatives of both families, and friends.
  • Praise for the Bride's beautiful presentation, and stories about her family life.
  • Welcoming the Groom into the family.
  • Words of wisdom and good wishes to the couple.
  • A toast to the Bride and Groom.
  • Thanks to anyone who has especially helped with the wedding and reception.
  • If you're not using an MC, the Father of the Bride should introduce the Groom.

The Groom

The Groom's speech often includes:

  • Thanks to the Bride's parents for allowing him to take their daughter's hand in marriage.
  • Thanks to his own parents, for all the happy years together.
  • Thanks to anybody who has contributed to the wedding and reception.
  • Praise for the Bride.
  • Thanks and a toast to the Bridesmaids.
  • Thanks to the flowergirls, pageboys, ring bearers, ushers, and groomsmen.
  • Thanks for the Best Man  - possibly say a few words about him.
  • To thank everybody for the kind wishes, cards and lovely presents.
  • If you're not using an MC, the Groom should introduce the Best Man.

The Best Man

The Best Man's speech often includes:

  • Compliments to the Bride and Groom.
  • Thank to the Groom for the invitation to be his Best Man.
  • Amusing stories about the Groom - but please remember your audience!
  • Speak about the Bride and how lovely she looks.
  • Thanks for the Bride on behalf of the Bridesmaids, flowergirls, page boys and ringbearers
  • Reading out of a few cards, possibly from absent relatives or close friends.
  • Introduction of the next item, if no MC.
