AFRICAN: Jumping the Broom is a custom that originated as the symbolic jumping the threshold from a carefree single life into the responsibilities of domestic life and a future together. As an offer to the gods to join in the celebration, wine is poured onto the ground.
VICTORIAN: as a lot of people in Australia might know, the tradition goes…Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a sixpence in the shoe.
BOHEMIAN: The groom gives his bride a rosary, a prayer book, a fur hat and the customary wedding ring. To protect his wife’s chastity he gives her a girdle with 3 keys. Before the ceremony the best man traditionally covers the Groom in the bride's cloak to keep the marriage free of bad spirits. |
